Take up the Cross

Image
Jesus submitted to a shameful death on the Cross, and he summons us to follow his example and path . Jesus tells us that if we wish to be his disciple, we must “ d eny ourselves, take up his cross, and follow him .” This was more than metaphorical language when he made this pronouncement on his final journey to Jerusalem. In the City of David,  he would demonstrate just what it means “ to take up the cross .”

Rescued from this evil age

Paul anchored all that God has done for us in the resurrection of Jesus, which also inaugurated the Messianic Age - Galatians 1:1-5. The source of Paul’s apostleship was the same God who raised His Son from the dead to “ deliver us from this evil age .” In his Letter to the Galatians , the Apostle responded to certain “ men from Jerusalem ” who were working as if the old era of the Law was still in effect, insisting that Gentiles must be circumcised and keep the Jewish calendar. They also questioned Paul’s apostolic authority.

The Mind of Christ

Image
The submission of Jesus to an unjust death is the pattern of the love and service to others that his disciples are called to imitate . The obedience of Jesus to his Father becomes the model for how we, as his followers, emulate Christ. His willing submission to death on the Roman Cross is the pattern for our conduct and attitude toward others. The elevation of the Nazarene to the Messianic Throne resulted from his submission to “ death upon a cross .” Conforming our lives to this example is how we learn to “ follow him wherever he goes .”

Handed Over

Image
Following Jesus means living a self-sacrificial life of service to others, especially to the weak and the insignificant . Jesus explained to his disciples what it meant to be the Messiah of Israel while on the road to Jerusalem. There, he would face his final confrontation with the Temple authorities ending in his unjust death at the hands of the Romans. Was not Jerusalem the appointed place where the prophets of Yahweh were slain, where the Messiah himself must suffer rejection and death, according to the Scriptures?

The Unrecognized Savior

Image
Jesus is revealed as the Savior of Mankind in his sufferings and self-sacrificial death for others, including his enemies . The inability of men to recognize Jesus as the Son of God until after his crucifixion is a central theme of the  Gospel of Mark . Ironically, the first man to do so is the Roman centurion on duty at his execution. His self-identification as the suffering “ Son of Man ” made him unrecognizable to unregenerate men.  He was the Savior no one expected or wanted .

The Road to Calvary

Image
As they approached Jerusalem, Jesus questioned his disciples - “ Who do men say that I am? ” The Gospel of Mark declares that he was “ ON THE WAY ” and does so at least nine times. His unrelenting march to Jerusalem echoed the words of Isaiah the Prophet: “ Behold, I send my messenger before your face who will prepare your way .” He was on the road to Calvary and death on the Cross.

Through His Faithfulness

Image
Having demonstrated that all men violate God’s revealed will, Paul concludes that no one is acquitted before Him “ from the works of the Law .” Instead, men and women are justified “ through the faith ” or faithfulness OF Jesus - They are reconciled with their Creator because of the gracious act of Jesus on their behalf. Since all men deserve condemnation and death, all they can do is respond with repentance and faith to what God has done for them.

Ransom for Many

Image
Christ’s disciples are called to self-sacrificial service for others just as Jesus gave his life to ransom many from sin’s bondage  – Mark 10:35-45. After predicting his death, two disciples began jockeying for high positions in Christ’s Kingdom. Thinking according to the ways of this world, they did not comprehend just what kind of Messiah Jesus is and what it meant to follow him. Nevertheless, he would demonstrate in Jerusalem how his followers become his disciples and achieve “ greatness ” in the Kingdom of God.

His Coming Death

Image
In the  Gospel of Mark , Jesus is “ on the way ” to Jerusalem his death at the hands of his enemies. The theme of his inexorable journey is repeated in  Mark , beginning with John the Baptist who came to “ prepare THE WAY of the Lord .” He would complete his mission as the ‘ Suffering Servant ’ of the  Book of Isaiah  when he was tried by the priestly leaders of the Temple and faced death outside the walls of the City of David at the hands of Rome.

Carrying His Cross

Image
The mission of the Messiah included suffering and death on behalf of others, and he summoned his disciples to follow His same path – Mark 8:31. Jesus explained what being the Messiah meant as he approached Jerusalem: suffering and death . His declaration was contrary to popular messianic expectations, including those of his disciples whom he also summoned to take up the Cross and follow his example. Failure to do so could render them objects of shame before the Lord of Glory on the Last Day.
