Wise or Foolish?

Image
At the end of his sermon, Jesus claimed absolute authority for his words. If we ignore them, we risk rejection by him – Matthew 7:21-28. “ I never knew you! Depart from me! ” These are the most frightening words we might ever hear from Jesus. His warning demonstrates that Christ’s teachings are not optional. The commandments of the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ teach us how we are to live as faithful citizens of the Kingdom of God.

In His Kingdom

Image
Jesus proclaimed a new political reality, the Kingdom of God, which bears little resemblance to the political systems and regimes of this age . Jesus appeared in Galilee proclaiming the Kingdom of God – “ Repent, for the kingdom is at hand .” The Kingdom promised by God was arriving in Christ’s life and ministry. He is the Messiah and King of Israel who summons all men to turn from their wicked ways and submit to his lordship while the opportunity remains.

Full of the Spirit

Image
After his baptism, the Spirit “drove Jesus into the wilderness… for forty days and nights.”  Like Moses, the Messiah of Israel was alone in the Judean desert confronted by the Devil. His only guide was the Word of God. Like Israel, he was “ tested .” Unlike that nation, he overcame every temptation and emerged victorious, for he was “ full of the Holy Spirit . ”

His Exceptional Kingdom

Image
Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God, which is ruled by the Servant of Yahweh, the one who gave his life “to ransom many” . Jesus arrived in Galilee proclaiming the Kingdom of God. In his ministry, the reign of God began to invade the Earth. But the nature of the messianic kingdom differs radically from the governments, rulers and ideologies of the present age, and it defies human expectations, experience, and wisdom.

Mercy, not Sacrifice!

Image
Forgiveness connects the call of the tax collector to the healing of the paralytic – Christ’s authority to forgive sins  – Mark 2:13-17. When Jesus pronounced the paralytic man’s sins forgiven, he offended the Scribes and Pharisees. But he went on to alienate them even further by showing mercy “ to sinners ,” individuals considered unacceptable by religiously observant Jews. Seeing him eating with “ tax collectors ,” the Scribes and Pharisees insinuated that Jesus was also a notorious sinner – (Mark 2:1-17).

The Message

Image
Jesus summoned his disciples to proclaim the Good News of his Kingdom to every inhabited corner of the Earth . The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not about reforming society or political systems. Christ’s message calls all men to repent and join a radically new social order and political reality, namely, the  Kingdom of God . This message is contrary to the political ideologies of the present world order. It subverts mankind’s philosophies and popular beliefs.

Jesus Reigns

Image
The New Testament links the enthronement of Jesus to his resurrection and ascension by applying key Messianic texts to him. He qualified to reign because of his faithful “ obedience unto death ,” and this was confirmed when God raised him from the dead and seated him “ at His right hand ” where he now rules over all things.

Kingdom Parables

Image
The Gospel of Mark provides only a few examples of the many parables taught by Jesus (“ Apart from a parable he did not speak to the crowds ”). In them, the dominant theme is the Kingdom of God that invaded the Earth in the ministry of Jesus and continues to grow and produce fruit wherever the Gospel is preached. The “ Son of Man ” taught the Jewish people in parables, but only as they “ were able to hear ,” and this clause stresses the responsibility of the listener to hear and heed his words.

Sowing Seeds

Image
The Parable of the Sower provides the key to understanding the parables of Jesus. The story’s point is that the Kingdom of God began to invade the present age starting with the proclamation of the Gospel by the “ Son of Man .” That process commenced with his announcement of the Good News when he was in “ Galilee of the Nations .” Ever since then, the Kingdom has been advancing across the Earth though largely unnoticed by humanity and even by many of his followers.

Witnesses for Jesus

Image
Men and women purchased by Jesus from every nation become priestly witnesses of what God has accomplished in His Son . In the  Book of Revelation , the men and women redeemed by Christ’s sacrificial death become a priestly company that transcends all national, social, and cultural boundaries. They are called to persevere in their testimony before the world regardless of suffering and persecution.

Ransom for Many

Image
Christ’s disciples are called to self-sacrificial service for others just as Jesus gave his life to ransom many from sin’s bondage  – Mark 10:35-45. After predicting his death, two disciples began jockeying for high positions in Christ’s Kingdom. Thinking according to the ways of this world, they did not comprehend just what kind of Messiah Jesus is and what it meant to follow him. Nevertheless, he would demonstrate in Jerusalem how his followers become his disciples and achieve “ greatness ” in the Kingdom of God.

Opposition & Proclamation

Image
Jesus began to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God in Galilee following the arrest of John the Baptist, an incident that foreshadowed the opposition he would face throughout his mission. In the end, resistance to his efforts culminated in his own arrest, trial, and execution in Jerusalem. His message brought fulfillment but also adversity. Unlike the prophets of old, his work did  NOT  begin or center in Jerusalem, though it certainly ended there - (Matthew 4:13).

His Authority

Image
After defeating Satan, Jesus began proclaiming the “Good News” of the Kingdom in Galilee – “ The season is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel .” The term “Kingdom of God” is a summary statement that meant different things to different people, but the man from Nazareth identified his mission with the glorious “ Son of Man ” figure described in the  Book of Daniel .

Empowered by the Spirit

Image
After his baptism, the Spirit “ drove Jesus into the wilderness… for forty days and nights .” Like Moses on Mount Sinai, the Messiah of Israel found himself alone in the Judean wilderness where he was confronted by the Devil. His only guide was the Word of God. Like Israel, he was “ tested .” Unlike that nation, he overcame every challenge and emerged victorious from the experience “ FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ,” and he then began to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom in the villages of Galilee.

The Gospel Begins...

Image
Redemption and God's Kingdom arrived in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, starting with his baptism by John – Mark 1:1-3. The Gospel of Mark opens with a declaration that combines passages from the Old Testament to provide the scriptural basis for the ministry of John the Baptist , and to set the stage for Christ’s mission . Mark begins with a note of fulfillment.
